Cheap Street Rules Update
In an effort to increase participation in Cheap Street for 2004, PRO has elected to drop the claim rule from the Cheap Street rules for this season. That means you don't have to worry about building a great engine only to have someone claim it for $3,000. That's the major change, but there are a couple other additions including limiting overbore of engines to 0.070 inch and rod bearing diameters cannot be machined more than 0.060 inch from the stock journal diameter. You must also use a three-ring piston, and no gas porting is allowed.

Angle-milling of heads is allowed, but you must remain within 3 degrees of the stock valve angle. For a small-block Chevy, that means the valve angle can change only 3 degrees maximum from the stock 23-degree angle. For weight breaks, Cheap Street specifies 3,250 pounds for a 365ci displacement. Maximum displacement is 385 ci but add 10 pounds for every cubic inch over 365 ci, so for a 385ci engine you'd have to weigh 3,450. That's it, gang. Let's go racin'!

PSCA Wild Street: Phoenix, Arizona
Back in April we announced that we were going radial racing in the Pacific Street Car Association's Mickey Thompson Wild Street class, and even promised results from the season opener. Unfortunately, we didn't quite make it to the first race, but we were finally able to make our debut by the third stop of the PSCA tour at the Speed World Motorplex in Phoenix, Arizona.

Truth be told, there were plenty of things going against us, including the lack of experience on radials, and making it worse was the simple fact that we didn't have a single opportunity to make a shakedown pass prior to the event. Nevertheless we took our chances and had an incredible first outing.

Our two-stage Nitrous Express-equipped 417ci small-block ran a stellar 8.92 at 151 mph, putting us in the Number Two qualifying position. Even more amazing is that the P275/60R15 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials helped produce a 1.33 60-foot time!

During Sunday's eliminations, we managed to get through the rounds and eventually met John Thompson and his beautiful '65 Mustang in the finals. Although we were quicker on the Tree and had the lead throughout most of the run, Thompson caught us at the last moment and took the win with an 8.92 to our 9.02 pass.

It was quite a weekend for all of us, and we learned a lot from this event. Foremost, we acknowledge the fact that all of our competitors are stand-up guys and very serious about their program. And as for us, we're simply ecstatic to be racing among them. Next stop: Fontana, California.
